Board of Directors

Statewide Super’s experienced Board of Directors are responsible for effectively managing your superannuation investment to help you achieve your future retirement goals. It’s a role our Board takes very seriously, working tirelessly to achieve great investment outcomes, ensure that members’ rights are protected, and oversee the strategic direction of the Fund.

Kenneth Williams B Econ (Hons), M App Fin, MAICD

Independent Chairman

Kenneth Williams was appointed to the Board by the Australian Services Union (ASU) as an independent director on 1 July 2012 and served as the Chair of the Statewide Super Investment Committee from 20 July 2012 to 31 December 2016.

On 1 January 2017, upon the retirement of Juliet Brown, he was appointed by the Board as Independent Chairman. Ken is also a member of Statewide Super’s Investment and Remuneration & Nomination Committees.

Kenneth holds a Masters of Applied Finance, a Bachelor of Economics with Honours and was the recipient of a Mitsui Education Foundation Scholarship (Japan) and an Australian Commonwealth Treasury Scholarship.

With over 25 years’ experience in corporate finance, specialising in treasury and financial risk management, he also has extensive Board experience. His Directorship experience has spanned both large and small listed and private companies, not-for-profit organisations and superannuation funds including employer appointed Director of the Qantas Superannuation Fund, employer appointed Director of the Normandy Mining Superannuation Fund and independent Director of Local Super. He has also Chaired the Audit & Risk Committee of the APRA regulated Mortgage Insurance Company.

During his career, Ken has held senior finance executive roles with Normandy Mining Limited, Qantas Airways Limited and Renison Goldfields Limited.

Kenneth is currently Chairman of Havilah Resources Limited (ASX Listed mining company) and serves the South Australian community as a director of the Lifetime Support Authority.

Yvonne Sneddon FAICD FCA

Yvonne Sneddon FAICD FCA

Employer Representative Director, appointed by Business SA

Yvonne Sneddon was nominated by Business SA as an Employer Representative Director and was appointed to the Board on 14 July 2014.

Yvonne chairs the Statewide Super Risk Committee and is a member of the Audit & Governance Committee.

Yvonne holds a Bachelor of Arts (Accounting) and is a fellow of the Chartered Accountants in Australia and New Zealand, and the Institute of Company Directors.

Based on Yvonne’s extensive career achievements and experience she provides broad strategic, governance, risk management, financial and commercial expertise to the Statewide Super Board.

Having been a Chartered Accountant in private practice, Yvonne left Deloitte as a partner in 2004 to become a professional independent non-executive director. She has more than twenty years experience as a director, holding over twenty board positions over her career and has more than 25 years’ experience providing governance, financial services and commercial advice.

Yvonne currently serves as a Director of Return to Work SA, Unity Housing Ltd and Flinders Reproductive Medicine Pty Ltd.

Ian Steel BA GAICD

Ian Steel BA GAICD

Member Representative Director, appointed by the Australian Services Union (SA & NT Branch)

Ian Steel was nominated by the Australian Services Union (SA & NT Branch) as a Member Representative Director and was appointed to the Board on 11 June 2010.

Ian chairs Statewide Super's Insurance & Claims Committee and is a member of Statewide Super’s Risk Committee.

Ian holds a Bachelor of Arts (Politics) and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Ian’s passion for superannuation and drive for workers to enjoy a more comfortable and financially secure retirement makes him an active and valuable contributor to Board discussions.

Holding the role of Branch Assistant Secretary of the Australian Services Union for over three years, union organiser and educator for over fifteen years, and with extensive community involvement and activism for over twenty-five years, Ian brings decades of experience in representing and advocating for the best possible entitlements for employees across a range of industries.

Joe Szakacs LLB/LP MAICD

Joe Szakacs LLB/LP MAICD

Member Representative Director, appointed by SA Unions

Joe Szakacs was nominated by the SA Unions as a Member Representative Director and was appointed to the Board on 20 January 2014.

Joe sits on Statewide Super’s Investment Committee, and is the Chairman of the Remuneration and Nomination Committee.

Joe holds a Bachelor of Law and Legal Practice and is admitted as a legal practitioner in the Supreme Court of South Australia. This expertise and experience has led to Joe’s appointment as the Chairman of the Remuneration and Nomination Committee on Statewide Super’s Board.

As a member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions Executive, the Board of Return to Work SA, Secretary of SA Unions and previously the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission, Joe has served working South Australians and the community for over 15 years.

He has extensive experience in representing the interests of working people in our community through leading and coordinating State and Federal campaigns, legal representation and advice, and through policy formulation and execution.

John Woodward JP MBA CMACS GAICD GAIST

John Woodward JP MBA CMACS GAICD GAIST

Employer Representative Director, appointed by Local Government Association South Australia

John Woodward was nominated by the Local Government Association South Australia as an Employer Representative Director and was appointed to the Board on 29 July 2015.

John is a member of Statewide Super’s Insurance & Claims, Audit & Governance and Risk Committees.

As an Australian Institute of Company Directors and Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees Graduate, and with qualifications that include a Master of Business Administration, specialising in Technology Management and Project Management, John brings wide-ranging expertise to the Statewide Super Board.

John has over two decades of experience in technology-related change programs, projects and consulting services across industries including the health, water, energy, and entertainment sectors.

As a founder of check-project.com and a Strategic Adviser to MCBI, John’s program and portfolio management experience sees him Lecture at Adelaide University. John is also a Councillor with the West Torrens City Council and is a Certified Member of the Australian Computer Society.

John currently holds a directorship position with The Hospital Research Foundation as a Non-Executive Board Member.

Joseph Scales

Joseph Scales

Member Representative Director, appointed by the Australian Services Union (SA & NT Branch)

Joseph Scales was nominated by the Australian Services Union (SA & NT Branch) as a Member Representative Director and was appointed to the Board on 9 September 2016.

Joseph is a member of Statewide Super’s Risk Committee.

Joseph is the National Director of Solar Citizens, an independent, community-based organisation bringing together millions of solar owners and supporters to grow and protect solar in Australia.

Prior to this, he was Secretary of the Australian Services Union for five years, leading the Union and managing its administration as Chief Executive Officer. Joseph is passionate about advocating on issues affecting members in their workplace as well as social and community concerns.

He was previously a Member of the Premier’s Climate Change Council and the Local Government Income Protection Scheme. Joseph also held a previous Directorship with the Electricity Industry Superannuation Scheme (EISS).

Employer Representative Director, appointed by Business SA

David Holston was nominated by Business SA as an Employer Representative Director and was appointed to the Board on 1 January 2017.

David chairs the Statewide Super Investment Committee and is a member of Statewide Super’s Remuneration & Nomination Committee.

David holds a Bachelor of Arts specialising in Economics/Politics, Diplomas in Education, Financial Planning and Superannuation Management and a Graduate Diploma of Business (Industrial Relations).

David’s previous experience as Executive Director at JANA Investment Advisors and a member of both the JANA Board and Research Committee, holds him in excellent stead to provide investment-expertise to the Statewide Super Board.

Prior to joining JANA in 1999, David held the positions of Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at National Australia Trustees and National Financial Management respectively.

David was a previous Director of the National Australia Bank Staff Superannuation Fund, chairing their Investment Committee. He was also a former Director of the Association of Super Funds Australia for over ten years and holds Life Membership.

David is also Chair of the Investment Advisory Committee to the Public Trustee in South Australia and is the Investment Consultant to the Adelaide based Wyatt Benevolent Fund.

Anne McEwen BA GAIST

Anne McEwen BA GAIST

Member Representative Director, appointed by the Australian Services Union (SA & NT Branch).

Anne McEwen was nominated by the Australian Services Union (SA & NT Branch) as a Member Representative Director and was appointed to the Board on 1 March 2017.

Anne is a member of Statewide Super’s Audit & Governance Committee.

Anne is also a board member at Forestry SA and Chair of Forestry SA Audit and Risk Committee. She is also Presiding Member at the SA Parks and Wilderness Council.

Anne has completed a Masters in International Business (Diplomacy and Trade). She also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

A former Senator for South Australia (2005- 2016), Anne was both the Chief Government Whip and Chief Opposition Whip in the Senate. Holding over fifteen Parliamentary Committee positions, Anne’s diverse career has seen her Chair both the Senate Selection of Bills Committee and the Senate Committee on the Environment and Communications. She was also Deputy Chair of the Human Rights Committee and a long serving member of the Senate’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade committees where she took a particular interest in South Australia’s defence industry and Australia’s trade relationships.

Prior to her parliamentary career, Anne was Secretary of the Australian Services Union (SA & NT Branch) and a member of the Australian Services Union National Executive Committee. While at the Union, Anne represented members working in the local government sector, was a member of the SA Local Government Research and Development Fund Advisory Committee and the SA Local Government Ministerial Advisory Committee as well as the SA Workers’ Rehabilitation and Compensation Advisory Committee.

Anne’s voluntary work includes as a former member of the Management Committee of the South Australian Working Women’s Centre and as National Co-Convenor and Finance Committee member of Emily’s List Australia, a national fundraising and advocacy organisation supporting women to run for Parliament.

Matthew Pinnegar

Matthew Pinnegar

Employer Representative Director, appointed by the Local Government Association on 24 August 2017.

Matthew Pinnegar was appointed by the Local Government Association as a Employer Representative Director on 24 August 2017.

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide and a Bachelor of Communications with Applied Economics from the University of South Australia.

He is the current Chief Executive Officer of the Local Government Association of South Australia. The LGA is recognised as the peak representative body for Local Government in South Australia.

He also serves on the board of the Local Government Finance Authority (LGFA) and is a Director of LGASA Mutual Pty Ltd, the company that oversees local government Mutual Liability and Workers Compensation Schemes.

His previous positions include as External Affairs Manager for BP Developments and he has over seven years of South Australian State Government experience including Chief of Staff, Ministerial Adviser and Senior Adviser in numerous Government portfolios including Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, State/Local Government Relations, Industry and Trade, Regional Development and Fisheries.
